There is growing interest in the role of new urban agriculture models to increase local food production capacity in cities of the Global North. Urban rooftop greenhouses and hydroponics are examples of such models receiving increasing attention as a technological approach to year-round local food production in cities. Yet, little research has addressed the unintended consequences of new modes of urban farming and food distribution, such as increased competition with existing peri-urban and rural farmers. We examine how small-scale farmers perceive (...) and have responded to a recently established rooftop greenhouse and online marketplace enterprise in Montréal, Canada. Drawing on interviews with key informants and small-scale farmers, we find that peri-urban and rural producers have been affected in three key ways that represent tensions, adaptations, and synergies arising from this new urban agriculture and food distribution enterprise. First, many farmers are concerned about increased competition and value conflation with the ideals of community supported agriculture and organic farming. Second, some farmers have adapted by developing novel marketing strategies and working with local bridge organizations to collectively market their produce to urban consumers. Third, a few farmers have decided to wholesale their produce to this new enterprise, allowing them to specialize production and avoid marketing their produce directly to urban consumers. Our study suggests that the emergence of a new form of alternative food network in Montréal has created both positive and negative disruptions for existing small-scale producers. Advocates for the expansion of new urban food production and distribution models should therefore give greater consideration to the effects on other actors in the local food system. (shrink)

The increasing use of cluster randomised trials in low-resource settings raises unique ethical issues. TheOttawa Statement on the Ethical Design and Conduct of Cluster Randomised Trialsis the first international ethical guidance document specific to cluster trials, but it is unknown if it adequately addresses issues in low-resource settings. In this paper, we seek to identify any gaps in theOttawa Statementrelevant to cluster trials conducted in low-resource settings. Our method is (1) to analyse a prototypical cluster trial conducted in a low-resource (...) setting (PURE Malawi trial) with theOttawa Statement; (2) to identify ethical issues in the design or conduct of the trial not captured adequately and (3) to make recommendations for issues needing attention in forthcoming revisions to theOttawa Statement. Our analysis identified six ethical aspects of cluster randomised trials in low-resource settings that require further guidance. The forthcoming revision of theOttawa Statementshould provide additional guidance on these issues: (1) streamlining research ethics committee review for collaborating investigators who are affiliated with other institutions; (2) the classification of lay health workers who deliver study interventions as health providers or research participants; (3) the dilemma experienced by investigators when national standards seem to prohibit waivers of consent; (4) the timing of gatekeeper engagement, particularly when researchers face funding constraints; (5) providing ancillary care in health services or implementation trials when a routine care control arm is known to fall below national standards and (6) defining vulnerable participants needing protection in low-resource settings. The U.S. FDA has issued emergency use authorizations for monoclonal antibodies for non-hospitalized patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 disease and for individuals exposed to COVID-19 as post-exposure prophylaxis. One EUA for an oral antiviral drug, molnupiravir, has also been recommended by FDA’s Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee, and others appear likely in the near future. Due to increased demand because of the Delta variant, the federal government resumed control over the supply and asked states to ration doses. As future variants (...) with increased infectivity and/or severity emerge, further rationing may be required. We identify relevant ethical principles and priority groups for access to therapies based on an integrated approach to population health and medical factors. Using priority categories to allocate scarce therapies effectively operationalizes important ethical values. This strategy is preferable to the current approach of categorical rules based on vaccination, immunocompromise status, or older age, or the ad hoc consideration of clinical risk factors. (shrink)

In early March 2014, some of the members of Culture on the Edge—a scholarly research collaboration of seven scholars of religion, interested in more theoretically sophisticated studies of identity, and all of whom are at different career stages and at a variety of North American institutions—had a conversation online on the use of the terms “critique” and “critical,” terms widely used in the field today but employed in such a variety of ways that the members of the group thought it (...) worthwhile to focus some attention on them. Newborn bloodspot screening programs are some of the longest running population screening programs internationally. Debate continues regarding the need for parents to give consent to having their child screened. Little attention has been paid to how meanings of consent-related terminology vary among stakeholders and the implications of this for practice. We undertook semi-structured interviews with parents, healthcare professionals and policy decision makers in two Canadian provinces. Conceptions of consent-related terms revolved around seven factors within two broad domains, decision-making and information (...) attainment. Decision-making comprised: parent decision authority; voluntariness; parent engagement with decision-making; and the process of enacting choice. Information ascertainment comprised: professional responsibilities ; parent responsibilities; and the need for discussion and understanding prior to a decision. Our findings indicate that consent-related terms are variously understood, with substantive implications for practice. We suggest that consent procedures should be explained descriptively, regardless of approach, so there are clear indications of what is expected of parents and healthcare professionals. Support systems are required both to meet the educational needs of parents and families and to support healthcare professionals in delivering information in a manner in keeping with parent needs. The progression of research and scholarly inquiry does not occur in isolation and is wholly dependent on accurate reporting of methods and results, and successful replication of prior work. Without mechanisms to correct the literature, much time and money is wasted on research based on a crumbling foundation. These guidelines serve to outline the respective responsibilities of researchers, institutions, agencies, and publishers or editors in maintaining the integrity of the research record. Delineating these complementary roles and proposing solutions for common (...) barriers provide a foundation for best practices. (shrink)

Randomized controlled trial trial designs exist on an explanatory-pragmatic spectrum, depending on the degree to which a study aims to address a question of efficacy or effectiveness. As conceptualized by Schwartz and Lellouch in 1967, an explanatory approach to trial design emphasizes hypothesis testing about the mechanisms of action of treatments under ideal conditions, whereas a pragmatic approach emphasizes testing effectiveness of two or more available treatments in real-world conditions. Interest in, and the number of, pragmatic trials has grown substantially (...) in recent years, with increased recognition by funders and stakeholders worldwide of the need for credible evidence to inform clinical decision-making. This increase has been accompanied by the onset of learning healthcare systems, as well as an increasing focus on patient-oriented research. However, pragmatic trials have ethical challenges that have not yet been identified or adequately characterized. The present study aims to explore the views of key stakeholders with respect to ethical issues raised by the design and conduct of pragmatic trials. It is embedded within a large, four-year project that seeks to develop guidance for the ethical design and conduct of pragmatic trials. As a first step, this study will address important gaps in the current empirical literature with respect to identifying a comprehensive range of ethical issues arising from the design and conduct of pragmatic trials. By opening up a broad range of topics for consideration within our parallel ethical analysis, we will extend the current debate, which has largely emphasized issues of consent, to the range of ethical considerations that may flow from specific design choices. Semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, across multiple jurisdictions, identified based on their known experience and/or expertise with pragmatic trials. We expect that the study outputs will be of interest to a wide range of knowledge users including trialists, ethicists, research ethics committees, journal editors, regulators, healthcare policymakers, research funders and patient groups. BackgroundThe ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines are widely endorsed but compliance is limited. We sought to determine whether journal-requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist improves full compliance with the guidelines.MethodsIn a randomised controlled trial, manuscripts reporting in vivo animal research submitted to PLOS ONE (March–June 2015) were randomly allocated to either requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist or current standard practice. Authors, academic editors, and peer reviewers were blinded to group allocation. Trained reviewers performed outcome adjudication (...) in duplicate by assessing manuscripts against an operationalised version of the ARRIVE guidelines that consists 108 items. Our primary outcome was the between-group differences in the proportion of manuscripts meeting all ARRIVE guideline checklist subitems.ResultsWe randomised 1689 manuscripts (control: n = 844, intervention: n = 845), of which 1269 were sent for peer review and 762 (control: n = 340; intervention: n = 332) accepted for publication. No manuscript in either group achieved full compliance with the ARRIVE checklist. Details of animal husbandry (ARRIVE subitem 9b) was the only subitem to show improvements in reporting, with the proportion of compliant manuscripts rising from 52.1 to 74.1% (X2 = 34.0, df = 1, p = 2.1 × 10−7) in the control and intervention groups, respectively.ConclusionsThese results suggest that altering the editorial process to include requests for a completed ARRIVE checklist is not enough to improve compliance with the ARRIVE guidelines. Other approaches, such as more stringent editorial policies or a targeted approach on key quality items, may promote improvements in reporting. (shrink)

This article reconstructs the reception of Fichte’s philosophy in the works of the physician and philosopher A.K.A. Eschenmayer between 1796 and 1801. In 1796/97, Eschenmayer was working on his project of a metaphysics of nature which would be capable of constituting a middle term between the empirical sciences and the transcendental philosophy. In doing so, he explicitly engaged with Kant, on the one hand, and with scientists of the time, on the other hand, while the influence of Fichte is comparatively (...) slight and less easily discerned. In 1798, however, he introduced into his studies of magnetism an explicit recognition of Fichte and a reference to the third principle of the Wissenschaftslehre. In 1799, Eschenmayer adopted a higher standpoint from which it was possible to conceive the genesis of the concepts which up to that point had been merely analysed. This change of viewpoint coincided with a deeper engagement with the works of Fichte. The analysis of the Dedukzion and of Eschenmayer’s explicit references to Fichte that is attempted in the present study leads to the conclusion that Eschenmayer not only adopted some terminology typical of Fichtean philosophy but also integrated into his deduction several theoretical elements developed by Fichte. The reconstruction of the influences that Fichte exercised on Eschenmayer’s thought is fundamental to an understanding of the theoretical position of Eschenmayer and the point of view from which in 1801 he formulated his criticism of Schelling’s idea of nature as autarchic and as its own legislator.Der Beitrag rekonstruiert die Rezeption der Philosophie Fichtes in den Werken des Arztes und Philosophen A.K.A Eschenmayer aus den Jahren 1796 bis 1801. 1796/97 verfolgt Eschenmayer das Ziel, eine Naturmetaphysik zu entwickeln, die als Mittelglied zwischen den empirischen Wissenschaften und der Transzendentalphilosophie fungieren soll. Dabei setzt er sich einerseits mit Kant und andererseits mit den Wissenschaftlern seiner Zeit auseinander. Der Einfluss von Fichte auf Eschenmayer ist hingegen vergleichsweise gering und nicht leicht festzustellen. Dennoch erkennt Eschenmayer bereits in seiner Studie zum Magnetismus aus dem Jahr 1798 das Verdienst Fichtes an und verweist auf den dritten Grundsatz der Wissenschaftslehre. Im Jahr 1799 erhebt sich Eschenmayer insofern zu einem höheren Standpunkt, als er nun die Genese der Begriffe entfaltet, die er vorher bloß analysiert hatte. Diese Änderung des Standpunktes führt Eschenmayer zu einer tieferen Auseinandersetzung mit den Werken Fichtes. Die in diesem Beitrag durchgeführte Untersuchung der Passagen aus Eschenmayers Dedukzion, in denen sich explizite Verweise auf Fichte finden, hat zu dem Schluss geführt, dass Eschenmayer sich nicht nur Fichtes Terminologie zu eigen macht, sondern auch mehrere von Fichte aufgestellte Theorien in seine eigene Deduktion integriert. Die Rekonstruktion der Einflüsse Fichtes auf Eschenmayer ist nicht nur für ein besseres Verständnis der Philosophie Eschenmayers unentbehrlich, sondern trägt auch zum Verständnis des Standpunktes bei, von dem aus Eschenmayer im Jahre 1801 Kritik an Schellings Idee der Natur als ihrer eigenen Gesetzgeberin übt. DaB fUr die Entwicklung der Phanomenologie Husserls nicht zuletzt auch,wissenschaftstheoretische' Motive ausschlaggebend waren, ist hinreichend bekannt. Umso mehr verwundert es, daB die Husserl-Rezeption sich diese Motive nur selten zueigen gemacht hat. Zwar sind in einer Reihe von Einzel­ wissenschaften, wie in der Literaturwissenschaft, der Sozialwissenschaft und besonders auch der Psychologie, phanomenologische Motive wirksam gewor­ den. Versuche einer ausdriicklichen wissenschaftskritischen Anwendung der Husserlschen Philosophie auf einzelwissenschaftliehe Theorien jedoch, wie sie z.B. Alfred Schiitz in seinem friihen Werk zur phanomenologischen Grundlegung der "verstehenden (...) Soziologie"l ansatzweise unternommen hat, sind rar. Freilich ging auch Husserl hier nieht eben mit gutem Beispiel voran. Auch er selbst hat seine wissenschaftstheoretische Programmatik nirgends einer ernsthaften Bewahrungsprobe unterzogen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung will diese Frage einer wissenschaftstheore­ tischen Anwendbarkeit der transzendentalen Phiinomenologie paradigmatisch im Hinblick auf die Problemstellungen der Geschiehtswissenschaft iiberprii­ fen. Was also kann die Phanomenologie fUr die Historik leisten? DaB sieh fiir eine solche Absieht gerade die geschichtstheoretischen Perspektiven in Hus­ serls Werk anbieten, hat vor allem zwei Griinde. L'interdisciplinarité se présente sous la forme d'un programme de pensée. Il s'agit d'établir grâce à elle un dialogue constructif avec les sciences médicales. C'est l'interdisciplinarité qui assume une forme concrète dans les situations clefs de l'humaine existence. Confronté aux données de la biologie moléculaire et de la médecine, le théologien se doit de différencier, de moderniser et de développer (...) ses définitions habituelles voire ses modèles de pensée. L'auteur discute le critérium de la supériorité biologique. Il voit ce critérium dans la mesure, dans laquelle un être vivant est capable d'explorer et d'exploiter le milieu; c'est-à-dire la capacité de se créer les conditions internes nécessaires, les conditions externes étant données. Cette capacité devient plus grande au fur et à mesure que les êtres gagnent une indépendence relative envers le mileu, par le développement de l'homéostasie.Pour pouvoir réagir d'une manière plus efficace envers les facteurs du milieu, il est nécessaire (...) que les fonctions de l'organisme soient plus précises. Cette précision est dimensionnelle et quantitative . L'auteur discute en détail seulement l'aspect de la précision dimensionnelle des fonctions, considérant celle-ci comme la mesure proprement dite de l'évolution morpho-physiologique.Il montre, que le coté spacial-morphologique et celui temporel-physiologique de cette évolution sont non seulement parallèles, mais encore analogues selon leur nature: sous les deux aspects, l'évolution signifie une augmentation de la complexité, une réduction des dimensions relatives des éléments composants; sous l'aspect physiologique, cela veut dire une augmentation de la vitesse des processus. Dans cette augmentation des vitesses voit l'auteur l'aspect physiologique de l'évolution du monde animal.On discute ensuite le problème des dimensions relatives: du „temps propre“ et de l'„espace propre“.En conclusion, l'auteur montre l'insuffisance des études comparatives morphologiques pour élucider la marche de l'évolution, le progrès biologique. L'évolution a de même un aspect physiologique, aussi important que celui morphologique. Seulement l'étude combinée des deux aspects permettra les recherches précises, quantitatives sur l'évolution.Der Verfasser bespricht das Kriterium der biologischen Superiorität ; er sieht dieses Kriterium in dem Mass, in dem ein Lebewesen fähig ist die Umwelt zu erforschen und auszunützen, d.h. sich die nötigen inneren Bedingungen an Hand der äusseren Bedingungen zu schaffen. Das Wachsen dieser Fähigkeit ist mit dem allmählichen Erlangen einer relativen Unabhängigkeit der Lebewesen der Umwelt gegenüber, durch die Entwicklung der Homöostasie, verbunden.Damit die Reaktionen der Lebewesen auf die Umweltsfaktoren möglichst wirksam sind, ist eine grösstmögliche Genauigkeit der Funktionen erforderlich. Diese Genauigkeit ist dimensionell und quantitativ . Der Verfasser bespricht ausführlich nur den dimensionellen Genauigkeitsaspekt der Funktionen, da er diesen als das eigentliche Mass der morpho-physiologischen Evolution betrachtet. Er zeigt, dass zwischen der räumlich-morphologischen und der zeitlichphysiologischen Seite dieser Evolution nicht nur ein Parallelismus besteht, sondern auch eine Wesensanalogie: beide Aspekte der Evolution bedeuten eine Steigerung der Komplexität, eine Verkleinerung der relativen Dimensionen der zusammensetzenden Elemente; vom physiologischen Standpunkte aus, bedeutet dieses eine Geschwindigkeitssteigerung der Vorgänge. In dieser Geschwindigkeitssteigerung, die in der phylogenetischen Reihe vor allem auf dem Gebiete der „animalische“ Funktionen festgestellt wurde, sieht der Verfasser den physiologischen Aspekt der Tierweltevolution.Dann wird das Problem der relativen Dimensionen besprochen: der „eigenen Zeit“ und des „eigenen Raumes“.Abschliessend, zeigt der Verfasser, dass die vergleichenden morphologischen Studien nicht genügen um den Gang der Evolution, den biologischen Fortschritt, zu klären. Die Evolution hat auch seinen physiologischen Aspekt, der genau so wichtig ist wie der morphologische. Nur das gleichzeitige Studium beider Aspekte wird eine genaue, quantitative Erforschung der Evolution ermöglichen.The author discusses the criterion of the biological superiority ; he sees this criterion in the measure in which a being is able to explore and to make use of its environment, that means to create for itself the necessary internal conditions on account of the external ones. The increase of this capacity is dependent of a gradual gaining of a relative independence of the beings towards the environment, by the development of homoiostasy.In order that the reactions towards the factors of the environment shall be more efficatious, a greater precision of the functions is necessary. This precision is dimensional and quantitative . The author discusses in detail only the aspect of the dimensional precision of the functions, meaning that this is the real measure of the morpho-physiological evolution. He shows that between the spatial-morphological aspect of this evolution and the temporal-physiological one there is not only a parallelism, but an analogy of nature: under the two aspects evolution means an increase of complexity, a reduction of relative dimensions of component elements; under physiological aspect this means an increase of the speed of processes. In this increase of speed the author views the physiological aspect of the evolution of the animal kingdom.Than the problem of relative dimensions is discussed: of the “own time” and “own space”.In conclusion the author shows that comparative morphological studies are not sufficient to elucidate the way of evolution, the biological progress. Evolution also has a physiological aspect, as important as the morphological one. Only the concomitent study of both aspects will permit a precise, quantitative research on evolution. (shrink)

In this article, I will explore how the underlying research values of ‘openness’ and ‘mutual responsiveness’, which are central to open science practices, can be integrated into a new ethos of science. Firstly, I will revisit Robert Merton's early contribution to this issue, examining whether the ethos of science should be understood as a set of norms for scientists to practice ‘good’ science or as a set of research values as a functional requirement of the scientific system to produce knowledge, (...) irrespective of individual adherence to these norms. Secondly, I will analyse the recent codification of scientific practice in terms of ‘scientific integrity’, a framework that Merton did not pursue. Based on this analysis, and illustrated on the case of COVID-19 as a case in which the institution of science was challenged to deliver urgently on societal desirable outcomes, I will argue that promoting open science and its core norms of collaboration and openness requires broader governance of the institution of science in its relationship with society at large, rather than relying solely on self-governance within the scientific community through a new ethos of science. This conclusion has implications for re-evaluating research assessments, suggesting that the evaluation of the scientific system should take precedence over evaluating individual researchers, and that incentives should be provided to encourage specific research behaviour rather than solely focusing on individual research outputs. Bu eserlerin bilhassa tevhid, naat, münâcât ve hâtime bölümlerinde Allah’ın rahmetine ve Hz. Muhammed’in şefaatine nail olmak arzusunun dile getirilmesi bir gelenek hâline gelmiştir. Zamanla, şefaati konu edinen ve başta Hz. Muhammed olmak üzere Allah’ın şefaat etmesine müsaade buyurduğu kişilerden şefaat isteğinde bulunulan manzum ve mensur müstakil eserler telif edilmiştir. Bu eserler, dinî-tasavvufi türlerden ayrılarak şefaatnâme olarak adlandırılmıştır. Şefaatnâmelerin geneli, eski Anadolu Türkçesi döneminde telif edilen Hikâye-i (...) Kesikbaş, Hikâye-i Deve, Hikâye-i Güvercin, Hikâye-i Geyik, Hikâye-i Kız, Hikâye-i İsa, Hikâye-i İsmail ve Hikâye-i İbrahim gibi dinî manzum hikâyelere anlatım ve üslup özellikleri bakımından benzemektedir. İslam dinini halka öğretmek amacıyla sade bir Türkçe ile kaleme alınan ve tahkiyenin ön planda olduğu bu hikâyelerden biri, muhtevasından dolayı şefaatnâme türü içerisinde değerlendirdiğimiz Şefaatnâme-i Yahyâ’dır. Çalışmamıza konu edilen bu eser, Süleymaniye Kütüphanesi Yazma Bağışlar Bölümü’nde 4042 demirbaş numarasıyla kayıtlı olan ve içerisinde Süleyman Çelebi’nin (ö. 1422?) Vesîletü’n-Necât’ı ile eski Anadolu Türkçesi döneminde telif edilen dinî muhtevalı pek çok manzum hikâyenin bulunduğu yazmanın 155a-160a sayfaları arasında yer almaktadır. Şefaatnâme-i Yahyâ, aruzun “fâ‘ilâtün / fâ‘ilâtün/ fâ‘ilün” kalıbıyla ve mesnevi nazım şeklinde yazılmıştır. 154 beyitten müteşekkil bu eserde, Hz. Muhammed’in günahkâr ümmet için üzülüp ağlaması, o esnada sohbetinde bulunan Hz. Ebû Bekir, Hz. Ömer, Hz. Osman, Hz. Ali, Hz. Ayşe ve Hz. Fatma’ya günahkâr kullara şefaat için ne yapacaklarını sorması ve onların da bu soruyu cevaplamaları tahkiye edilmiştir. Bu makalede, öncelikle şefaatnâme hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Ardından, Şefaatnâme-i Yahyâ’nın dil, şekil, anlatım ve muhteva özellikleri incelenmiştir. Sonrasında ise Yahyâ’nın Şefaatnâme’sinde ele alınan konunun Ömeroğlu’nun (ö. 14. yy) Şefaatnâme’sinde, Pir Muhammed’in (ö.?) Şefaatnâme’sinde, Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Kütüphanesi Y. Y. 520/2 numarada kayıtlı yazmanın 30a-34a yaprakları arasında bulunan müellifi meçhul bir şefaatnâmede de yer alması sebebiyle bu dört metin mukayese edilmiştir. Farklı şairlerin kaleminde, aynı olay örgüsünün nasıl ifade edildiği bir tablo dâhilinde ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Die Aufsiitze des vorliegenden Bandes wurden zwischen 1950 und 1980 ge­ schrieben. 2/15· ist der friiheste Aufsatz. Ich schrieb ihn 1950/52, teils in Wien, nach Diskussionen mit Elizabeth Anscombe, die mir die damals noch ungedruck­ ten Wittgensteinschen Schriften zeigte, teils in London, als Stipendiat des British Council. Wittgenstein macht es klar, daB eine Praxis wie die Praxis des Denkensl Handelns/Redens/Planemachens in einer bestimmten Kultur sich durch abstrakte Begriffe und Beschreibungen weder darstellen, noch lenken laBt, und zwar vor allem darum, weil (...) jede Regel, die man zu soleh auBerer Umformung einsetzen mochte, nur dann sinnvoll wird, wenn man sie eng mit der Praxis verbindet und dadurch einer Erfassung durch einfache und klar aufgebaute Begriffe und MaB­ stabe entzieht: ist ein MaBstab wirksam, dann ist sein Inhalt viel komplizierter als seine Formulierung vermuten laBt. LaBt sich umgekehrt sein Inhalt mit Hilfe ein­ facher Schlagworte erfassen, dann wird eine interessante Praxis von ihm kaum auf fruchtbare Weise gefordert werden, und das selbst dann nicht, wenn sich die ver­ wendeten Schlagworte mit anderen Schlagworten zu einem schonen philosophi­ schen System zusammenfiigen (man vergleiche etwa Brechts Praxis der Theater­ arbeit und seine,Theorie' der Verfremdung). 1m Falle der Wissenschaften bedeu­ tet das, daB methodologische Oberlegungen nur im Zusammenhang mit konkreten Problemen sinnvoll sind: die Methodologie ist ein komplizierter Teil der wissen­ schaftlichen Praxis, nicht ein tiber ihr stehender Richter. Mehr verschroben ausge­ driickt: fruchtbare Methodologie ist forschungsimmanent, nicht forschungstrans­ zendent. (shrink)

Die Forderung einer Philosophie als strenger Wissenschaft, von Husserl zum ersten Mal in dem bekannten Logosaufsatz erhoben, richtet sich nicht, wie meistens gedacht und auch von Dilthey selbst so verstanden ist, gegen den Historizismus von Dilthey, sondern vielmehr gegen dessen Identifizierung von Philosophie mit Weltanschauungsphilosophie und damit mit Weisheitslehre. Husserl hat vom Anfang an bis zum Ende seines Lebens sich der Herausarbeitung dieer Idee gewidmet und die Phänomenologie als Verwirklichung dieser Idee betrachtet. Dementsprechend soll man auch der geläufigen Auffassung zuwider (...) die Phänomenologie vor allem als Wissenschaftslehre auffassen und interpretieren. Die Ablehnung aller Weltanschauungsphilosophie ruft nicht nur das Problem hervor, wie Husserl sich verhält zur Metaphysik, sondern was er unter strenger Wissenschaft versteht. Einerseits ist nach ihm die Trennung und Unterscheidung von Philosophie und Weltanschauung oder Metaphysik in Übereinstimmung mit dem modernen Denken, das gerade erst dadurch zur Herausbildung einer Universitas von strengen positiven Wissenschaften (Mathematik, Naturwissenchaften, aber auch strengen Geisteswissenschaften) gekommen ist, andererseits steht aber seine Auffassung und Ausarbeitung von Philosophie als apodiktischer Wissenschaft im Gegensatz zum modernen Denken. Husserl betrachtet die Phänomenologie als die Realisierung der zuerst von Piaton gestellten Idee von Philosophie als einer endgültigen, einzigen und universalen Wissenschaft, welcher Descartes eine radikale Wendung in die Richtung einer egologischen Apodiktizität gegeben hat. Infolgedessen hat die transzendentale Phänomenologie auch die Aufgabe alle Einzelwissenschaften, sowohl die positiven Tatsachenwissenschaften als die positiven apriorischen, vernunftkritisch zu durchleuchten und dadurch zu Abzweigungen der Philosophie als universaler Wissenchaft zu machen. Wie dieses Verhältnis zwischen positiver Wissenschaft und Phänomenologie als strenger Wissenschaft gedacht werden muss, ist immer ein wichtiges Thema für Husserl gewesen. Die positiven Wissenschaften teilt Husserl ein in Tatsachenwissenschaften und apriorische Wissenschaften (Leibniz' Idee von Wissenschaft der Möglichkeiten kombiniert mit der Idee von invarianten Strukturen). Husserl ist nun der Ansicht, dass eine positive Tatsachenwissenschaft nur eine exakte und strenge Wissenschaft werden kann, wenn sie eine apriorische Wissenschaft neben sich zur Entwicklung bringt oder sich darauf stützen kann, wie es z. B. der Fall gewesen ist mit der empirischfaktischen Naturwissenschaft in Beziehung zu der Mathematik und der reinen Mechanik. Dasselbe Verhältnis soll man sich denken zwischen einer apriorischen (phänomenologischen) Psychologie, einer allgemeinen apriorischen Sprachwissenchaft und Historie und den dazu gehörenden empirischen Tatsachenwissenschaften. Philosophie und Wissenschaft sind für Husserl identisch mit Rationalismus. Dennoch unterscheidet er grundsätzlich zwischen positiver und transzendentaler Rationalität. Durch eine Verbindung von Rationalität und Verständlichmachung (die Methode des Verstehens der Geisteswissenschaften auf das höchste Niveau eines transzendentalen Verständnisses gebracht durch die konstitutive Phänomenologie) hebt die Phänomenologie als absolute Geisteswissenschaft den Gegensatz zwischen Natur-und Geisteswissenschaften auf und entwickelt sich zur sapientia universdis. Im dritten Teil kehrt der Autor zu der Frage zurück, ob Husserl immer die Trennung zwischen wissenschaftlicher Philosophie und Weltanschauung aufrecht erhalten hat auch in den Krisisabhandlungen. Im allgemeinen muss das bejaht werden. Noch in 1924 wird sogar die Frage erhoben, ob Kant, der doch auch Philosophie als strenge Wissenschaft entwickeln wollte, wohl eine echte Philosophie gebracht hat und nicht darin verfehlt hat eben durch die Vermischung von wissenschaftlicher Philosophie mit Weltweisheit, die auch von ausserwissenschaftlichen Quellen schöpft, und durch den Mangel an dem Radikalismus der Apodiktizität. Husserl hat die Idee der Philosophie als strenger Wissenschaft tatsächlich zur Ausführung gebracht als transzendentale Wissenschaft der Subjektivität d. h. als Deskription oder Hermeneutik des Bewusstseinslebens. Es gibt abo bei ihm eine Verbindung zwischen Wissenschaftslehre und Ratio oder Logos einerseits und Vernunft, Subjektivität und Leben andererseits. Der spätere Husserl hat diese Verbindung immer mehr vertieft in die Richtung einer wissenschaftlichen Lebensphilosophie mit Aufrechterhaltung der Idee der Philosophie als apodiktischer Wissenschaft. Er hat nicht nur den Objektivismus der positiven Wissenchaften zu erhellen und aufzuklären versucht von ihrem Ursprung aus der Lebenswelt, die auch ihr bleibender Boden ist, sondern in dem phänomenologischen Idealismus schliesslich als geistiger Weltanschauung die Lösung aller geschichtsphilosophischen und ethischen Probleme gesehen, die besonders durch die Krise der europäischen Kultur hervorgerufen sind. Die Urstiftung der Griechen und besonders vos Platon findet in der transzendentalen Phänomenologie ihre Endstiftung und in einer geschichtsphilosophischen Deutung des Sinnes der Geschichte, die nach Husserl notwendig universal-teleologisch sein muss, hat die Phänomenologie und die Geschichte der Philosophie die Aufgabe als Selbstverwirklichung der Vernunft zu fungieren (Husserliana VI, § 73). Die Philosophie als strenge Wisenschaft schafft die Möglichkeit dem menschlichen Sein und Werden apodiktische Ziele zu geben und sich berufen zu wissen zu einem Leben und Streben in der Apodiktizität d. h. auf Vernunft hin, was den Menschen allein „selig” machen kann. Fünfzehn Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung ist die Neuroethik ein internationales wissenschaftliches Feld mit enormer Dynamik. Innerhalb weniger Jahre wurden eigene Kongresse, Zeitschriften, Forschungsförderprogramme, Fachgesellschaften und Institute gegründet. Gleichwohl besteht erheblicher Dissens über die Definition und den Gegenstandsbereich dieses neuen Gebiets. Wir argumentieren hier für eine differenzierte Konzeption, wonach neben der Reflexion ethischer Probleme der Neurowissenschaft und ihrer überwiegend neurotechnologischen Anwendungen auch die ethische Reflexion neurowissenschaftlicher Forschung zur Moralität zur Neuroethik gehört. Dies umfasst zwar nicht neurowissenschaftliche oder neuropsychologische Studien zur Moralität, (...) wohl aber die Reflexion der Bedeutung dieser Forschung für die Ethik und das Recht. Wir geben einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Themen der Neuroethik, woraus deutlich wird, wie sehr in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen, auch jenseits von Medizin und Gesundheitswesen, neuroethische Fragen relevant sind. Das Potenzial der Neuroethik als eines neuen Wissenschaftsfeldes liegt darin, durch eine Verknüpfung neurophilosophischer und medizinethischer Themen sowie eine breite interdisziplinäre Vernetzung neue Antworten auf gesellschaftlich drängende Fragen zu finden. Bu süreçte peyderpey gelen her bir vahyin, söz konusu hedefin gerçekleşmesinde önemli bir rolü olmuştur. Bu sebeple farklı zaman ve mekânlarda nazil olan, farklı konularda farklı kitleleri muhatap alan her bir vahiy pasajı ya da her bir sure bir diğeri ile birçok yündKur’ân, yirmi üç yıllık bir zaman diliminde, tevhid inancına sahip birey-lerin oluşturduğu bir toplum inşa etmek üzere nazil olmuştur. Bu (...) süreçte peyderpey gelen her bir vahyin, söz konusu hedefin gerçekleşme-sinde önemli bir rolü olmuştur. Bu sebeple farklı zaman ve mekânlarda nazil olan, farklı konularda farklı kitleleri muhatap alan her bir vahiy pasajı ya da her bir sûre bir diğeri ile birçok yönden bir anlam münâsebeti, bütünlüğü içerisindedir. Bu bağlamda gelişen Münâsebetü’l-Kur’ân ilminin verileri de bu durumun bir ispatı ve örneği olarak değerlendirilebilir. Araştırmada bu husus kısa sûreler üzerinden anlaşılmaya ve ortaya konulmaya çalışıldı. Sonuçta, Mushaf tertibinde farklı dönemlerde nazil olmalarına rağmen Asr sûresinden Nas sûresine kadarki sûrelerden her birinin öncesindeki ve sonrasındaki sûreyle tam bir anlam bütünlüğüne sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Bu durum, bir yandan Mushaf’ın tertibinin tevkifî olduğunun bir delili olarak görülebilir. Fakat sûrelerin tertibinin ictihadî olması halinde de böyle bir anlam bütünlüğünden bahsedebiliriz. Zira Kur’ân, bütünüyle tek bir kaynaktan ve tek bir hedefi gerçekleştirmek üzere gelmiştir. Sûreler arasındaki anlam münâsebeti ve muhteva birliği de, bu durumun bir ifadesi olarak zikredilebilir. en bir anlam münasebeti, bütünlüğü içerisindedir. Bu bağlamda gelişen Münasebetü’l-Kur’an ilminin verileri de bu durumun bir ispatı ve örneği olarak değerlendirilebilir. Bizler de araştırmamızda bu hususu kısa sureler üzerinden anlamaya ve ortaya koymaya çalıştık. Le premier théorème d'incomplétude est hi‐même un argument décisif en faveur du réalisme, si l'on accepte le principe d'«accessibilité» en vertu duquel nous pouvons décider de toutes les propriétés de nos constructions intellectuelles. Par ailleurs, il existe (...) un large spectre d'arguments permettant de statuer sur un énoncé indécidable dans un système formel. La thèse mécaniste, selon laquelle l'intelligence humaine peut être pensée sans distorsion significative sur le modèle d'une machine de Turing, est donc inacceptable.SummaryAccording to K. Moreover, there are numerous arguments that permit the evaluation of an undecidable statement in a formal system. The mechanistic thesis, according to which the functioning of the human mind, without significant distorsion, can be compared to a Turing machine, is now unacceptable.ZusammenfassungNach Gödel sind die methodologischen Einschränkungen der Konstruktivisten irrig, und er hält den realistischen Standpuukt für viel fruchtbarer. Das erste Unvollständigkeitstheorem ist selbst ein entscheidendes Argument zugunsten des Realismus, sofern das «Zugänglichkeitsprinzip» akzeptiert wird, wonach wir fähig sind, alle Eigenschaften unserer intellektuellen Konstruktionen zu bestinmen. Zudem gibt es zahlreiche Argumente, die die Beurteilung einer unentscheidbaren Aussage in einem formalen System erlauben. Die mechanistische These, nach welcher das Funktionieren des menschlichen Geistes ohne wesentliche Verzerrung mit einer Turingmaschine verglichen werden kann, ist heute nicht mehr annehmbar. Krauses grosstenteils anhand unveroffentlichter Handschriften zu rekonstruieren und den philosophie- und padagogikgeschichtlichen Kontext zu erhellen. Eingehend behandelt werden die ersten deutschen Philosophiekongresse, die von theistischen (I. H. Fichte) bzw. linkshegelianischen (L. Noack, K. Nauwerck) Richtungen und von Krauseanhangern veranstaltet wurden. Die Untersuchung widmet der engen Beziehung zwischen Frobel und Krause und dem daraus entspringenden 'Krause-Frobelianismus' besondere Aufmerksamkeit: Sie zeigt, inwiefern Krauses Philosophie mit ihren Tendenzen zum Praktischwerden und zum 'menschheitlichen' (...) Diese Ausagabe macht Buchbesprechungen wieder zugänglich, die in verschiedenen Zeitschriften vom Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts verstreut erschienen sind und deswegen schwer erreichbar waren. Sie sammelt alle Dokumente, in denen von mehr oder minder bekannten Zeitgenossen Einwände gegen die Elementarphilosophie erhoben wurden, auf die Reinhold selbst in seinen Büchern antwortete. Auf diese Weise wird ein philosophischer Kontext geschildert, in dem einzelne Konstellationen deutlich werden, die sich wechselseitig widerrufen und widerlegen. Viele der zeitgenössischen Rezensionen beinhalten auBerdem einen Vergleich zwischen der Kantischen und (...) der Reinholdschen Philosophie; die vorliegende Ausgabe bringt insofern Bewertungen von Kants theoretischem Unternehmen zum Ausdruck, als dieses meistens per Kontraposition zur Elementarphilosophie, aber auch direkt beurteilt wird--Back cover. Two short typescripts by G. Lukács from the archive, dating from 1941/42, shed light on his appraisal of the cultural ‘inner reserves’ of Germany and the ‘moral reserves’ of the democracies involved in the Second World War, as well as on Lukács’s political philosophy at that time. The conception of an intrinsic interrelation of a humanist philosophical anthropology and rationalist epistemology elucidates his egalitarian and democratic account. Both texts are located within the intellectual development of the author in an introduction (...) by the editor, which sketches the historical background and indicates relevant contemporaneous theoretical and political debates, such as the controversies over realism and humanism and, also in dispute with K. Farben sind für uns sowohl objektive, als auch phänomenale Eigenschaften. In seinem Buch argumentiert Fabian Dorsch, daß keine ontologische Theorie der Farben diesen beiden Seiten unseres Farbbegriffes gerecht werden k ann. Statt dessen sollten wir akzeptieren, daß letzterer sich auf zwei verschiedene Arten von Eigenschaften bezieht: die repräsentierten Reflektanzeigenschaften von Gegenständen und die qualitativen Eigenschaften unserer Farbwahrnehmungen, die als sinnliche Gegebenheitsweisen ersterer fungieren. Two essential periods may be identified in the early stages of the history of vitamin D-resistant rickets. The first was the period during which a very well known deficiency disease, rickets, acquired a scientific status: this required the development of unifying principles to confer upon the newly developing science of pathology a doctrine without which it would have been condemned to remain a collection of unrelated facts with very little practical application. One first such unifying principle was provided by the (...) notion of hygiene; while the blanket explanations provided by this notion alone were much too general to enable rickets to achieve scientific status, it did point out the need to look for specific external causes for the disease and to examine the life-style and dietary habits of the patients. The second phase of the conceptualization of the disease was the assumption of a specific cause — that is, using concepts developed in the area of infectious diseases. This was made possible by fundamental similarities between deficiency and infectious diseases, in spite of their apparent differences. Both types of illness have some of the characteristics of what Georges Canguilhem calls the ontological representation of disease as opposed to dysharmonic representations, which primarily concern the endocrine diseases. It is precisely this shift from one to the other manner of perceiving ill health that enabled the identification of the vitamin D-resistant rickets. Conceptualization of the notion of vitamin D resistancy required that the conditions causing the disease be looked for within the organism rather than outside it; this was thus the first time that endocrine concepts were applied to studying the physiology of vitamin D.The history of resistant rickets therefore represents an interesting model for understanding the growth of biomedical knowledge. It allows the development of a number of more general ideas on the question of the relationship between biology and medicine and on the thorny problem of specificity in medical thinking. As far as this topic is concerned it can be seen that there was an ongoing exchange between medical and biological thinking during the initial period up until 1937, and that one could deny any such specificity in medical thinking during this same period. Albright, for example, used human diseases as spontaneously produced models for experimental biology. It was also more feasible for an experimental biologist to administer toxic doses than for a clinician to do so.What, then, if any, is the place of the specificity of medical thinking in this history? The fact that medicine is characterized not only by it ccognitive content78 but also by its final aim, which is to restore health, makes it necessary to take factors other than objective knowledge into consideration. This is particularly evident in two aspects of medicine, therapeutics and nosology, and in approaching the notion of pathological individuality.Therapeutic activity has a largely empirical approach. Many drugs, such as cod-liver oil, were discovered empirically. Treatment often in the past, and still now, has proceeded by trial and error, upon no established theoretical basis. At this level the relationship between biology and medicine is roughly comparable to that between science and technology79 \3- that is, it is impossible to reduce either therapeutics or technical activities to the simple application of basic science. In this sense, the application of vitamin D to vitamin-resistant rickets is quite typical. Further-more, in the case studied here, the therapeutic activity heralds a definite breaking away from the medicatrix naturae of conventional medicine dating back to ancient times, and it embodies a new concept of the organism and of disease: no longer can the diseased organism be thought of as merely having a perturbed equilibrium requiring restoration by means of a natural style of medicine. On the contrary, vitamin D resistance is an obstacle that indicates profound biological dysfunction, to be rectified only by means of an extremely aggressive and therefore dangerous therapy. The therapy thus serves to reveal the severity of the dysfunction, thereby leading inevitably to conceptual innovation. This sheds light on the theoretical innovations of which the therapeutic activity is capable.Therapeutic activity is also influenced by notions of health and illness, normal and pathological states, none of which may be determined entirely objectively. For example, the term healing as used by Albright in the case of resistant rickets that he described may be discussed in this light.Nosology, or the classification of diseases, depends largely on the description of clinical syndromes, which are themselves mainly based on subjective elements (discomfort, disability, or the extent of a patient's suffering). The advent of pathological anatomy at the beginning of the nineteenth century disrupted classification by introducing the concept of localized anatomical lesions81-and, hence, an element of material objectivity \3- into nosology. Radiological examination further complicated matters by enabling the equivalent of an autopsy on living matter. Lastly, biological examination complicated nosology by showing that biological anomalies may exist in human beings without necessarily leading to a pathological condition. Medical thinking can choose to combine all these elements to describe a disease, but can also separate them and retain only a few, or a single one, according to requirements - as did Albright.The notion of biological and pathological individuality is fundamental to the development of medical thinking. Whatever its theoretical origin, medical thinking has since ancient times incorporated the idea that each individual reacts differently to the same treatment and his own specific pathological tendencies. I mentioned earlier that in the history of vitamin D-resistant rickets the notion of rachitic tendency reflected this type of thinking. After 1937, this history progressed by successively separating new individual entities, affecting smaller and smaller groups of individuals in each case. In other words, the need to understand and to define individual illness more closely required the development of new concepts and the construction of new individual categories of disease linking these concepts to older clinical, radiological, and biochemical elements. Humanitarian health care practitioners working outside familiar settings, and without familiar supports, encounter ethical challenges both familiar and distinct. The ethical guidance they rely upon ought to reflect this. Using data from empirical studies, we explore the strengths and weaknesses of two ethical models that could serve as resources for understanding ethical challenges in humanitarian health care: clinical ethics and public health ethics. The qualitative interviews demonstrate the degree to which traditional teaching and values of clinical health ethics seem insufficient (...) for addressing all the realities of health care practice during humanitarian missions. They equally suggest that greater good orientations of public health ethics can thwart the best intentions of health care professionals wanting to attend to the interests of individual patients. Even though neither is complete on its own for helping guide health professionals on field missions, taken together these models have much to offer. At the same time, the narratives of the humanitarian health care workers illustrate how some of the crucial differences between public health ethics and clinical ethics generate tensions in humanitarian health practice. We offer an analysis of some of the complexities this creates for humanitarian health care ethics, and consider ways of adjudicating between the two models. (shrink)

The topics of social ontology, culture, and institutions constitute a problem complex that involves a broad range of human social and cultural cognitive capacities. We-mode social cognition and shared intentionality appear to be crucial in the formation of social ontology and social institutions, which, in turn, provide the bases for the social manifestation of collective and shared psychological attitudes. Humans have ‘hybrid minds’ that inhabit cultural–cognitive ecosystems. Essentially, these consist of social institutions and distributed cognition that afford the common grounds (...) for the objectives of we-mode shared intentionality. As such, they stabilize social cognition normatively and offer predictive power in social interaction. Full-blown we-mode shared intentionality fundamentally depends on the functions of social institutions. (shrink)

Humanitarian healthcare work presents a range of ethical challenges for expatriate healthcare professionals, including tragic choices requiring the selection of a least-worst option. In this paper we examine a particular set of tragic choices related to the prioritization of care and allocation of scarce resources between individuals in situations of widespread and urgent health needs. Drawing on qualitative interviews with clinicians, we examine the nature of these choices. We offer recommendations to clinical teams and aid organizations for preparing and supporting (...) frontline clinicians in their efforts to determine the least-worst option, and in their responsibility for making such choices.
